When it comes to embarking on that (almost inevitable) New Year diet, it can be difficult to know where to start. True, everyone’s going to have their own ideas about what works when it comes to wellness, but the most important thing to keep in mind at all times, is your health. It’s the reason you’re trying a diet in the first place we bet, which means there’s really no point going ahead if you aren’t going to bear this in mind.
With any new year, too many people look for a quick fix; the latest buzz word in dieting to help them trim down – and fast! But there really is no rush. Losing weight isn’t a competition; it’s about getting on the right track to wellness, in the healthiest way possible. For us here at Spafinder Wellness 365, it certainly doesn’t mean cutting out entire food groups like carbohydrates. So this year, ditch the fad diet and instead cut out junk food. Carbs are not the enemy; chocolates, cakes, crisps – in fact, many of the other ‘C’ words, are.
The key when it comes to dieting, is to follow a strict nutrition plan – it’s one of the few ways to ensure you’re on the road to better health. Don’t omit carbs from your diet to lose weight. Sure, you will lose weight if you cut out carbs quickly, but think about the overall effect on your health and the weight will be hard to hold off in the long term.
Used as one of the primary energy systems for the body during bouts of exercise, carbohydrates play a key part in the functioning of a normal, healthy human being. The human body has evolved to ingest fats, protein and, you guessed it, carbohydrates; we can’t follow a healthy, balanced diet without including foods from all three groups.
While the body may well be able to survive for some time without carbohydrates, it won’t function as effectively. Cutting this essential food group out can lead to a reduced lack of recovery, decreased performance and strength, mood swings and even lack of mental focus. In short, it affects the functioning of the body – and we say that’s no way to see in January or the subsequent months.
The body’s primary source of energy, carbohydrates are more valuable than you may realise – and for the ultimate in wellness, it’s important you add potatoes, pasta and bread to your diet in as healthy a way as possible.
Nutrition is about looking after your body, giving it the food and drink it needs to function; it isn’t about depriving yourself of entire food groups.
It’s true that ditching potatoes, pasta and bread may be one of the most common diet strategies – but it certainly isn’t the healthiest. For optimum wellness, heed the advice of a nutrition expert, who’ll map out a program tailored to you and your lifestyle. It’s time to say ‘no’ to gimmicky diets and ‘yes’ to good, honest food and a healthier way of life. Are you with us?
